Bare Necessities
Bare Necessities presents viewers with an entertaining relief from today’s indoor hi-tech world. It appeals to the first human instinct of survival and provides the viewer with the engaging opportunity to see how individuals, just like themselves, cope when they are plucked from their cosseted 20th century lifestyles. How do we create territories, evolve as a team, resolve disputes, and survive the elements?
Each week the program takes two teams from different professions and challenges them to survive for a working week, five days, in the wild. Although from the same profession none of the three people in a team will know each other. Marooned in different locations around the World, the teams will strive to survive with only five basic items - the Bare Necessities. The changing location and brief will determine the exact nature of the challenge they will face, but every week teams will have to build a shelter, construct a toilet (hygiene is part of survival!), light fires and find and cook their food.
The pilot for Bare Necessities was transmitted on BBC2 on 23 December 1999, a series followed in Summer 2000, and a second series was transmitted on BBC2 starting 11 January 2001. Bare Necessities in made in association with BBC Manchester.
